Dili, July 17th 2026 – The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) and the Dili Institute of Technology (DIT) officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) during the event titled “Strengthening Cross-Border Collaboration in Education, Research, and Community Engagement of the Republic of Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste,” held at the DIT campus on Friday (July 17th).
The MoA signing ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Prime Minister II of Timor-Leste, Mariano Assanami Sabino Lopez, and was preceded by the exchange of commemorative gifts as a symbol of friendship and the two institutions’ shared commitment to strengthening cross-border collaboration.
The event was officially opened by the Deputy Prime Minister, who emphasized that cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste represents a unique partnership rooted in the two countries’ shared history, culture, and geographical proximity. He noted that Timor-Leste and West Timor occupy the same island, creating significant opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration.
He also highlighted the importance of collaboration within the ASEAN region, particularly in addressing strategic issues such as improving nutrition and reducing stunting. According to him, joint education and research initiatives serve as essential instruments for strengthening institutional partnerships while enhancing the capacity and quality of human resources in both countries.
Furthermore, he pointed out Timor-Leste’s strategic position as a gateway for expanding cooperation with countries in Europe and the Americas. Addressing the students in attendance, he encouraged them to embrace challenges, stating, “As young people, you must learn to love challenges, because it is through challenges that character is built.”
Through the signing of this MoA, the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Dili Institute of Technology reaffirmed their commitment to expand cooperation in education, research, and community engagement as part of their shared vision of fostering sustainable cross-border collaboration.
