Yogyakarta – The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) organized an Organic Waste Composting Training on Wednesday (June 3rd 2026). The program aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of the university community, particularly the cleaning staff, in transforming organic waste into compost that benefits the environment and promotes the sustainable use of resources.
The training featured two speakers: Dr. Sudaryatno, M.Si., Head of the Environmental Science Master Program at SPs UGM, and Cahya Talitakum Driessen, S.T., Founder and CEO of PT Driessen Tech Aguna. During the session, participants were introduced to biotechnology-based organic waste management, covering the decomposition process and the conversion of organic waste into compost that can improve soil quality while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.
“Waste management is a driver of economic growth,” said Cahya during the training.
The training emphasized the importance of changing the perception of organic waste—not as mere refuse, but as a valuable resource that can be processed to support productivity and environmental sustainability, and also to discuss composting techniques. Participants learned how proper waste management contributes to environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture, and community well-being. Following the presentations, they also took part in a hands-on composting practice session.
SPs UGM, with this initiative, continues to foster an environmentally conscious culture within the university while reinforcing the role of higher education institutions in promoting sustainable practices that generate positive impacts for society and the environment.
