Yogyakarta, August 14th 2025 – The Environmental Management Master Program (MPL), Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada, conducted a field matriculation course focusing on natural landscapes. The Parangtritis Sand Dunes and the Graben in Patalan, Jetis, Bantul served as learning sites for the students.

The matriculation was intended for the new MPL students batch 47 and 48, under the guidance of Dr. Langgeng Wahyu Santosa, S.Si., M.Si. and Dr. Rika Harini, S.Si., MP. The purpose of this activity was providing students with real-world understanding of environmental conditions and natural landscapes.

The first destination was the Parangtritis Sand Dunes. Students studied various phenomena related to marine and aeolian landforms, coastal ecosystems, and fluvio-marine landscapes. In this session, Dr. Langgeng Wahyu Santosa, S.Si., M.Si. delivered an in-depth explanation on the formation of sand dunes, coastal characteristics, and the ecosystems found in the Parangtritis Sand Dune area.

Dr. Rika Harini, S.Si., MP., provided further insights into the resource potential of the sand dune area, such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries. She also explained the region’s potential environmental issues, including natural disasters and degradation due to human activities.

Students then visited Patalan, Jetis, Bantul. They observed firsthand the Graben landform, a low-lying area flanked by two faults – the Menoreh Hill Fault in Kulonprogo and the Baturagung Fault in Gunungkidul.

This activity demanded students to gain a deeper understanding of the material presented by directly observing environmental conditions. This experience aims to enhance their knowledge and awareness of environmental dynamics, both from ecological and social perspectives.
