Reviewing the Role of Biotechnology in Supporting the Green Transition for Sustainability

The Biotechnology Masters and Doctoral Program at the Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) successfully held the X Biotechnology Seminar and Workshop which took place in the SPs UGM Auditorium on 25th – 26th October 2024. This activity had the theme “Fostering Interdisciplinary Solutions in Biotechnology for Sustainability” .

Attended by the Dean of SPs, this event also invited prominent speakers including Dr. rer. Nat. Erich Bürger, Prof. Yoji Kawano from the Institute of Plant Science and Resources, Okayama University, and Chio Oka, M.D., Ph.D. from the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Medicine Nara Institute of Science and Technology.

This activity is one of the result of international collaboration established by the Biotechnology Masters and Doctoral Study Program with partners to mobilize practitioners and lecturers in industry as well as students in biotechnology, agriculture, health, the environment and industry to support the green transition for sustainability.

“The aim of this activity is to exchange information and build networks between scientists and academics at home and abroad in the field of biotechnology to support the green transition,” said Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN.Eng., Dean of SPs when giving a speech.

This seminar is an opportunity to support collaboration across scientific fields, as well as improve the quality of research and technology that contributes to sustainable economic growth in Indonesia. Apart from agricultural biotechnology, this event also focuses on advances in biotechnology in waste management and renewable energy.

Networking sessions were an important part of the event, allowing attendees to connect and discuss potential collaborations. Many participants expressed their enthusiasm in forming global partnerships that could lead to innovative projects in biotechnology. This is in line with the SDG goal to encourage global partnerships for sustainable development.
