A Course on INTRODUCTION TO TRANSLATION STUDIES
The course will provide a systematic introduction to the major theoretical concerns
of the emerging discipline of Translation Studies.
This is not a course in translation techniques but will provide an opportunity
to develop new perspectives on the wider dimensions of translation practice.

Schedule

October 7th 09.00-10.45 Introduction: What is “translation”?
Translation as a linguistic, cultural, and commercial activity. A short history
of Translation Studies.
October 12th 09.00-10.45 Translation strategies: “formal”,
and “dynamic” equivalence. The unit of translation. Translation
shifts
October 14th 09.00-10.45 Functional theories of translation:
text type, action and purpose.
Polysystem Theory: The work of Itamar Even-Zohar and Gideon Toury.
October 19th 09.00-10.45 Translation and Postcolonial theory
October 21st 09.00-10.45 Translation and Feminist theory
November 2nd 09.00-10.45 Student presentations

The course will be of interest to students in Linguistics, Literature, Media
Studies, Sociology, Women’s Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and other areas
of the humanities and social sciences.

Venue : Ruang Sidang A Lt.5 Sekolah Pascasarjana UGM
Maximum Participants : 30 people.
