The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) has once again demonstrated its commitment in establishing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and supporting the creation of a university that makes a real impact on society. This commitment has been manifested through a community service program involving the exploration of water sources and the construction of six bore wells for irrigation and clean water needs in Purworejo Regency.

The six bore wells are located in Girimulyo Village (Kemiri District), Mendiro Village (Ngombol District), Purwodadi Village (Purwodadi District), and Bagelen Village (Bagelen District).

The Regent of Purworejo, in his speech, expressed appreciation for the contribution of SPs UGM. According to him, this program greatly assists the local government in providing clean water resources while also improving community welfare.

“This program not only provides water but also supports increased agricultural yields such as rice and chili, thereby contributing to poverty reduction. We hope these bore wells will be well maintained so that their benefits can be sustained in the long term,” he said during the inauguration of the six bore wells at the Purwodadi Village Hall on Friday (October 31st).

Meanwhile, the Dean of SPs UGM stated that this program holds special value due to many parties involvement.

“This program is unique because it represents a collaboration between the university, alumni, local government, and even international partners. However, such collaboration also brings its own challenges—namely, how to ensure the wise use of water and maintain the program’s sustainability,” he explained. He expressed hope that this synergy would continue in the years to come.

This initiative is part of the SPs UGM Community Service Grant Program led by Dr. Sudaryatno, which has been running since 2022. Over time, the program has successfully collaborated with various strategic partners such as the Government of Japan, Purworejo Regional Water Utility (PDAM), PP KAGAMA, Ganesha Young Alumni (SMAN 1 Purworejo), and SMP 8 Purworejo Alumni. This cross-institutional collaboration is dedicated to empowering communities by improving access to clean water. (Suronokarti)
