The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM), in collaboration with the Directorate of Education and Teaching (DPP UGM), organized a public lecture titled “Geomaritime Dynamics in the Indonesian Region” featuring Admiral (Ret.) Prof. Dr. Marsetio as the keynote speaker. Prof. Marsetio, an alumnus of the Doctoral Program in Cultural and Media Studies at SPs UGM, shared his insights on the challenges and strategic potential of Indonesia’s maritime sector within the global geopolitical landscape.
This public lecture was open to all master’s and doctoral students at UGM as part of the university’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In his presentation, Prof. Marsetio emphasized that Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic country, holds a strategic position between two continents and two oceans. With 10 maritime borders—9 of which have the potential for conflicts with neighboring countries—Indonesia must strengthen its diplomacy and maritime security strategies to safeguard its sovereignty and maritime resilience.
The students’ enthusiasm for the topic was evident. Lutfi, a master student in Geography, expressed that the lecture broadened his global perspective on politics and maritime resilience in Indonesia. “The material presented was highly relevant to my field and provided a deep understanding of how maritime resilience impacts national stability,” he said.
Similarly, Yosi, a doctoral student in Law, added that the lecture offered new insights into international maritime law and the challenges in managing Indonesia’s outermost islands. “I now have a better understanding of how international law approaches maritime boundaries. This lecture was truly remarkable,” he stated.
At the end of the session, Prof. Marsetio conveyed his pride in returning to his alma mater to share knowledge and experiences. “I am very proud and happy to be back at UGM. I hope that the insights I have shared will benefit students in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of maritime issues,” he concluded.
