UGM Public Relations Forum Held Workshop on Sexual Violence Publications Preparation: Encouraging Victim’s Perspective Media

Yogyakarta, May 5th 2025 – Public Relations of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a workshop on compiling publication narratives regarding Sexual Violence (KS) cases. This activity took place in the Multimedia Room of the UGM Balairung Building, attended by the public relations department and the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS) of all units or faculties at UGM.

The event was opened by Dr. Andi Sandi Antonius Tabusassa Tonralipu, S.H., LL.M. who serves as the university secretary. Dr. Andi said UGM is currently facing a case regarding sexual violence and it is UGM challenge to communicate to the public because it has spread widely.

“How should we provide the information clearly with protection for the victim and encouraging other victims,” ​​said Dr. Andi.

Ratna Noviani, SIP, M.Sc., Ph.D., the next main resource in this session explained in detail on publication manuscript regarding sexual violence that must protect the victims’ privacy by writing a publication narrative from the victim’s perspective. The publication narrative has to show the institution’s commitment and positionality in handling sexual violence cases.

UGM refers to the Rector’s Regulation No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence and the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture, Research and Technology No. 55 of 2024 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Higher Education Environment. Affirmation of the campus’ position and commitment in handling violence at UGM, namely justice and gender mainstreaming.

Workshop participants were actively invited to identify publication narratives for each word and sentence used carefully. Participants were also shown examples of sexual violence case notes and asked to create publication narratives in based on the publication rules checklist.

This activity is expected to be become concern for all participants to be more careful in compiling publication narratives, especially regarding sexual violence cases with victims Privacy’s protection and sexual violence perpetrators. It is also to improve participants’ ability to write news according to journalistic ethics.
