Sleman, August 9th, 2024 – The Strengthening Program for Pillar 3 of the Safe School Disaster Management Unit (SPAB) was held at SD Negeri Umbulharjo, Plosorejo, Umbulharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, Yogyakarta as part of a Community Service activity organized by the Master’s Program in Disaster Management (MMB) at the Graduate School (SPs) of UGM, with support from Basarnas DIY, UGM Disaster Study Center, and BPBD Sleman.
This community service program will be conducted in three sessions every Friday in August, specifically on August 9th, 16th, and 23rd, 2024. The activity involves 12 teachers and 93 students from SD Negeri Umbulharjo, located in the Disaster-Prone Area (KRB) 1 of Mount Merapi, approximately 14 km from the summit of the volcano.
In the first meeting held on August 9th, 2024, the teachers received basic disaster management materials, including the creation of an emergency response organizational structure, evacuation route maps, a school chief’s regulation on the emergency response organizational structure, and educational posters on volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. SD Negeri Umbulharjo, which is listed in InaRisk Personal, faces a medium risk from volcanic eruptions and a low risk from earthquakes.
The Principal of SD Negeri Umbulharjo, Albertus Kristianta Wicaksana, expressed his support for the community service program in his speech. “We are very pleased and fully support the community service program from UGM’s Graduate School, as this theme aligns with the school’s work plan to introduce disaster awareness to the students,” he said.
Dina Ruslanjari, Chief of the Disaster Management Master Program at UGM and Chair of the Community Service, explained, “Before conducting the service, we coordinated with BPBD Sleman to select an appropriate school, and SD Negeri Umbulharjo was recommended because it had previously received the SPAB program. Therefore, this school is very suitable for the theme of strengthening Pillar 3 of SPAB that we are implementing.”
In addition to faculty members, the community service also involves students such as Muhamad Irfan Nurdiansyah, Nabilla Auriel Fajarian, and Akbar Afandi. Irfan, in his presentation to the teachers, emphasized the importance of the program. “Indonesia is the second most disaster-prone country in the world according to the World Risk Index 2023. Another data from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2019 show that 497,576 schools in Indonesia are located in disaster-prone areas. This makes programs like SPAB highly necessary,” he explained.
With this community service activity, it is hoped that SD Negeri Umbulharjo, located in a disaster-prone area, will become more resilient and better prepared to face potential disasters.
This activity is also in line with the implementation of SDGs Number 1 (No Poverty), Number 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Number 4 (Quality Education), Number 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Number 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
