
The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) welcomed a visit from Osaka University to explore potential collaborations in education, research, and community service, particularly with the Biotechnology Study Program. The meeting, held on March 17th 2025, was attended by Prof. Kazuhito Fujiyama, Director of the International Center for Biotechnology at Osaka University, along with representatives from SPs UGM, including Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Dean of SPs UGM), Prof. Dr. Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, S.Hut., M.Agr. (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Collaboration), and several other academics.
The discussion covered various key aspects of strengthening academic collaboration between SPs UGM and Osaka University. One of the main topics was the possibility of establishing a double-degree program for Master’s and Doctoral levels in Biotechnology, which is expected to provide students with the opportunity to pursue education at both universities under international academic standards. Additionally, the meeting explored funding schemes to support the program, including those available through LPDP and other potential funding sources.
Ensuring the smooth implementation of the collaboration, the discussion also addressed curriculum alignment between the study programs at both institutions. This alignment is essential for creating a seamless academic experience for students participating in the joint programs. Beyond the double-degree program, academic collaboration will also be expanded through visiting lectures featuring experts from both universities, as well as joint research initiatives to drive innovation and advance knowledge in Biotechnology and related fields.
Both institutions, as a follow-up step, emphasized the importance of implementing the collaboration based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously agreed upon, ensuring that the partnership is carried out systematically and delivers long-term benefits for both parties.
Dean of SPs UGM, Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., highlighted that this meeting marks a significant step in strengthening UGM’s international academic network. “Collaboration with Osaka University is expected to expand opportunities for students and faculty members to engage in research and deepen their expertise in the field of Biotechnology,” she stated.
This meeting is expected to further solidify the relationship between SPs UGM and Osaka University while opening up greater opportunities for the development of education, research, and community service creating meaningful contributions to the advancement of Biotechnology.
