Sleman, August 16th, 2024 – The Master of Disaster Management Program, Graduate School, Gadjah Mada University (MMB SPs UGM), in collaboration with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas DIY), organized an event titled “Evacuation and First Aid Drill” at SDN Umbulharjo, located in the disaster-prone area around Mount Merapi. This activity is part of the “Basarnas Goes to School” program, aimed at enhancing the preparedness of students and teachers for emergency situations, particularly in areas vulnerable to volcanic eruptions.
The drill, which is joined by 12 teachers and 93 students, focused on independent evacuation and the introduction of rescue equipment. Haris Prasetyo from Basarnas DIY led the training session, providing basic knowledge about evacuation procedures and the use of rescue equipments. The event was also supported by the Basarnas team, who demonstrated first aid techniques to ensure all participants understood how to handle emergency situations appropriately.
Dr. Retnadi Heru Jatmiko, a lecturer at MMB SPs UGM, emphasized the importance of school community preparedness in facing disasters. “This collaboration aims to equip schools in disaster-prone areas, such as SDN Umbulharjo. The skills are needed for proper and swift evacuation,” he stated.
Through this program, it is hoped that disaster education and drills in schools can minimize risks, enhance safety, and emphasize the importance of a safe and resilient educational environment.
