MMB Guest Lecturer: Exploring the Characteristics and Perspectives of Sustainable Disaster Management

Yogyakarta (16/10), the Master of Disaster Management Study Program at the Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) held a public lecture featuring Prof. Syamsul Maarif, former head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). This event took place in Courtroom C and was attended by active students of the Master of Disaster Management Study Program (MMB).

Prof. Maarif shared his extensive knowledge about the characteristics and perspectives of disaster management. During the lecture, the resource person invited students to discuss the effectiveness and sustainability of current disaster management practices, especially within the community and government framework.

This activity aims to encourage students to critically assess and analyze whether existing strategies are truly sustainable and beneficial for ecosystems. These strategies are very important for biodiversity conservation.

This lecture also highlights the importance of integrating local knowledge and practices into disaster management strategies. Prof. Maarif shared examples of community-based disaster management initiatives that successfully utilized local resources and knowledge to increase resilience.

Students actively participated in discussions, asked questions and shared their perspectives on the challenges faced in disaster management. Prof. Maarif provided thoughtful responses and encouraged students to remain involved and proactive in finding solutions to pressing issues in disaster management.

The event closed with a call to action for students to apply their learning in real-world contexts. Prof. Maarif inspired the audience to become advocates for sustainable disaster management practices.
