The Media and Cultural Program (KBM), Graduate School Universitas Gadjah Mada, held an academic discussion series titled “Gilles Deleuze and Creativity in Art” on Friday, May 8th 2026. The event took place at Meeting Room A, 5th Floor, Unit 1, Graduate School UGM, and featured Dr. J. Haryatmoko, SJ. as the speaker.
The discussion series was attended by KBM students as well as participants from various academic backgrounds interested in philosophy, culture, media, and the arts. The participants had gathered in the morning to take part in the presentation and discussion session with the speaker.
Dr. J. Haryatmoko, SJ., during the session, explored the ideas of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, particularly regarding creativity and artistic practices. The discussion highlighted how Deleuze viewed creativity not merely as the production of artworks, but also as a way of thinking, creating new possibilities, and developing some forms of expression that continuously evolve and transform.
The discussion was conducted in an active and interactive atmosphere. Participants engaged in conversations about the relationship of art, creativity, experience, and the relevance of Deleuzian thought to understand contemporary cultural and media practices. Several participants also connected Deleuze’s concepts to digital media phenomena, popular culture production, and current artistic practices.
The session, in addition to the presentation, created a space for participants to further explore philosophical concepts frequently used in media and cultural studies. Participants showed strong enthusiasm with various questions and reflections throughout the event.
The KBM Program at UGM, with this activity, hopes the discussion series can continue to serve as an academic forum that encourages the exchange of ideas, strengthens critical perspectives, and supports interdisciplinary discussions in the fields of culture, media, and the arts.
