Yogyakarta, May 20th 2025 — Prof. Dr. Ir. Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, S.Hut., M.Agr., was officially inaugurated as Professor in the field of Wood Science at the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The inauguration ceremony took place during the Open Session of the UGM Council of Professors at the UGM Senate Hall, attended by university leaders, academic colleagues, and Prof. Widyanto’s family.
In his inaugural speech titled “The Role of Wood Science in the Development of Sustainable Tropical Forestry”, Prof. Widyanto outlined the strategic contributions of Wood Science to tropical forest sustainability, the added value of forest products, and innovation in the forestry sector. He emphasized that wood is not merely a raw material but a biological product whose formation is deeply influenced by environmental conditions and forest ecosystems.
“Wood possesses unique properties and extraordinary characteristics unmatched by other materials. Its sustainable use requires a deep interdisciplinary understanding—from anatomy and chemistry to processing technologies,” he explained.
Widyanto further highlighted the rapid development of Wood Science and its integration with various disciplines, including forensics, archaeology, and climate change mitigation. He underscored the importance of Wood Science as an essential component of sustainable development (SDGs), especially in quality education, industrial innovation, institutional justice, and the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems.
The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt expression of gratitude from Prof. Widyanto to everyone who supported his academic journey—teachers, mentors, research partners, and his beloved family who have been a source of strength throughout.
“This inauguration is a great responsibility. I hope I can fulfill this role in the best way possible, to make meaningful contributions to science, education, and the sustainability of our forest resources,” he concluded with emotion.
