Yogyakarta, 8th August 2024 – The Master’s and Doctoral Study Program in Biotechnology at the Postgraduate School of Gadjah Mada University held a biology practicum for high school biology teachers throughout DIY on 7th – 8th August 2024 at the Laboratory of the Master’s and Doctoral Study Program in Biotechnology, PAU UGM Building. This activity was carried out in two sessions which aimed to improve understanding and teaching skills regarding Molecular Genetics

Before practice, participants received in-depth material on the Central Dogma of Biology and DNA Replication, as well as Molecular Genetic Techniques such as DNA Isolation and PCR. They also study the basic theory of Genetic Engineering, including cloning techniques and gene expression.

In the workshop session, participants had the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge with direct practice. Techniques studied include DNA isolation, PCR, electrophoresis, cloning, gene expression, and SDS PAGE.

Participants carried out the practicum with enthusiasm and the activities were interactive when carrying out laboratory practicums, for example during simple DNA isolation from strawberries and DNA isolation kits from fish. They can observe directly how each sample reacts and conclude what the results of the practice.

“I am very enthusiastic about taking part in this activity because the material presented is very relevant to learning at school. This activity provides an in-depth understanding of biotechnology which I can share with my students.” said Didik Purwaka, S. Pd., M.Pd, Chair of the Yogyakarta City Biology Subject Teachers’ Conference (MGMP).

This activity is expected to strengthen teacher competence in teaching modern biology and prepare students to understand the ever-advancing development of biotechnology science. This is a manifestation of the tridharma of higher education, especially education, research and community service and is in line with sustainable development goals (Sustainable Development Goals).
