Josaphat Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (JMRSL) at Chiba University, Japan is one of the facilities visited by the Master of Environmental Management (MPL) Study Interest which focuses on benchmarking studies of remote sensing laboratory studios. The visit was held on January 25th 2025 together with the Environmental Science Master and Doctoral Programs led directly by the Dean of the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University (SPs UGM), Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN.Eng.

This comparative study visit aims to study the laboratory management system, integration of cutting-edge technology, and research funding models that have been successfully implemented at JMRSL. The warm welcome from Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, B.Eng., M.Eng., Ph.D., Professor of radar at the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University gave a good impression of the experience and insights provided.

The JMRSL Laboratory is known as a leading research center in micro-radar-based remote sensing. Technologies developed in this laboratory have been used in various global projects for environmental change monitoring, disaster mitigation, and sustainable natural resource exploration.

During the visit, the UGM team engaged in discussions on the latest technologies in remote sensing and their implications for sustainable environmental management. Prof. Josaphat shared insights on innovative research conducted at Chiba University, emphasizing the role of technology in improving data collection and analysis for environmental studies.

SPs UGM highlighted the importance of remote sensing technology such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to support accurate environmental monitoring. This comparative study is a momentum for the MPL UGM SPs Environmental Management Studio to introduce big data and artificial intelligence-based systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in environmental change analysis.
