Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Sc., Chief of the Population Doctoral Study Program at the Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) carried out research activities as a form of the Higher Education Tridharma in Karyamukti Village, Panyingkiran District, Majalengka, West Java in July 2024. The research was carried out with a team consisting of lecturers and students namely Ratih Fitria Putri, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., Berlin Syahputra Situmorang, Gheffira Tsuraya Gunawan, Nugroho Bagus Wicaksono, dan Nufi Alabshar.
Majalengka Regency is UGM’s partner in research and community service activities. The originality of this research lies in the research topic of extreme poverty based on indicators from the World Bank at the village level. The aim of this research is to analyze conditions of extreme poverty based on indicators from the World Bank and formulate appropriate strategies to overcome extreme poverty in Karyamukti Village, Panyingkiran District, Majalengka Regency.
Interviews with the people of Karyamukti Village, field observations, and supporting data in the form of secondary data. The research results show that in Karyamukti Village there are 1,348 residents experiencing extreme poverty. The level of extreme poverty in Karyamukti Village can be categorized as quite high with a percentage of 24.66% of the total population of 5,467 people.
Prof. Sri Rum said that this research produced several appropriate strategies for overcoming extreme poverty in the research area, namely (1) increasing agricultural productivity, (2) developing local economic diversification, (3) expanding access to education, (4) optimizing social protection ( social protection), (5) strengthening community capacity (empowerment).
