The strength of academic research is tested with data analysis on campus and also the diligence required to comply with bureaucratic procedures in the field. This was demonstrated firsthand by senior academician of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Si., who directly led the preparation for field research in Magelang Regency from September 16th to 17th 2026.
The delegation from the Disaster Management Master Program Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM), under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Si., held discussions and received a warm welcome from the Secretary of Kaliangkrik Subdistrict. This face-to-face meeting reflected academic ethics in seeking permission and guidance from local authorities before deploying students for Field Work Practice (PKL).
Field preparations during the two-days activity did not stop at the subdistrict level. According to the team’s agenda records, four crucial stages had to be completed as the foundation for legitimate research. The first and most fundamental step was obtaining a permit from the National Unity and Political Agency (Kesbangpol).
The team, after securing the initial approval from Kesbangpol, immediately proceeded to arrange specific permits for data collection and obtain consent to interview respondents from various relevant institutions. One of the key institutions that became a focus of the team’s coordination was the Magelang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
Amid the marathon of bureaucratic licensing procedures, the team also had to complete other fieldwork tasks in parallel. They were required to carefully determine specific locations most relevant to the research topic, while simultaneously searching for suitable accommodation to serve as a basecamp throughout the research activities.
The direct presence of Prof. Sri Rum Giyarsih in Kaliangkrik to oversee each stage of the preparation process provided a tangible example for young researchers. This lengthy bureaucratic process demonstrates that credible and impactful research is always built upon administrative compliance and thorough field preparation. With a strong foundation of permits in place, the public now awaits valuable academic contributions and findings from the slopes of Kaliangkrik.
