The second day of the Scientific Writing Workshop organized by the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) focused on strengthening students’ skills in preparing scientific manuscripts for publication. The workshop was held on Thursday, August 27th, at the UGM Graduate School and was attended by master and doctoral students from various programs.
The second day began with a session on “Utilizing the e-Library,” delivered by Dr. Safirotu Khoir. The session provided students with guidance on utilizing scholarly information resources as an essential part of the scientific writing process.
The discussion continued with Plenary Session 4 on “Scientific Writing Ethics & the Soshum–Saintek Journal Landscape,” featuring Ratih Fitria Putri, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D. from the UGM Directorate of Research. During the session, Ratih highlighted recent developments in scientific journals in Indonesia, as well as programs offered by the UGM Directorate of Research enabling students to participate in order to support their scientific writing and publication efforts.
Participants, following the plenary session, were divided into classes based on their academic clusters, namely Social Sciences and Humanities (Soshum) and Science and Technology (Saintek). This grouping allowed students to participate in discussions that were more closely aligned with the characteristics of their respective research fields.
The Parallel Session one provided participants with material on “Characteristics and Structure of a Systematic Literature Review Publication Manuscript.” Meanwhile, Parallel Session 2 continued with the topic “Writing Literature Reviews, Theoretical Frameworks, and the Use of AI.”
These parallel sessions gave students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the key components of scientific articles and adapt them to the characteristics of their research and respective academic fields. The cluster-based approach was expected to help students apply the workshop materials more contextually to the manuscripts they are currently developing.
The workshop concluded with a Closing Plenary Session delivered by Ahmad Suparmin, SP., M.Agr., Ph.D., Coordinator of Research and Publication Quality Assurance at the UGM Graduate School. On the occasion, the organizing committee emphasized that student support would not end with the completion of the workshop. The UGM Graduate School will subsequently organize a Publication Clinic as a follow-up to the workshop.
The Publication Clinic is designed as an individual consultation forum where participants can discuss and review their scientific article drafts. This activity provided participants the opportunity to meet directly with reviewers and receive feedback on manuscripts they are preparing for submission to academic journals.
The Publication Clinic required participants to submit their scientific article drafts after the workshop in accordance with the deadline set by the organizing committee. Thus, the workshop is expected not merely to provide theoretical knowledge, but also to encourage students to produce manuscripts that can be further developed toward scientific publication.
