Yogyakarta, May 13th 2026 — The Media and Cultural Studies Program of the Graduate School Universitas Gadjah Mada, in collaboration with the Department of Communications Universitas Islam Indonesia, held a Workshop on Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) and the Discourse Coalition Framework (DCF) at Meeting Room A, 5th Floor, Unit 1 Building, the Graduate School UGM.
The workshop featured Prof. Dr. Frans J.S. Wijsen. He was the keynote speaker and the moderator was Dian Dwi Anisa, S.Pd., M.A. The event was attended by students from the Media and Cultural Studies Program UGM, students from the Department of Communications UII, and members of KATABUMI.
The workshop focused on introducing Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) and the Discourse Coalition Framework (DCF) as approaches in social humanities research. In his presentation, Prof. Wijsen explained that DNA and DCF can be used to analyze relationships among actors, ideas, and discourse coalitions in various public issues.
These approaches, according to him, are highly relevant for research in media, culture, religion, communication, and public policy, as they enable researchers to systematically map discourse dynamics through network-based analysis.
The workshop consisted of two main sessions. The first session introduced the conceptual foundations of DNA–DCF, and the second session continued with group discussions and hands-on practice in applying the methods to research. Participants were guided through the processes of identifying actors, mapping discourse networks, and analyzing relationships among ideas within specific issues.
The discussion sessions were lively and interactive, with participants raising various questions regarding the application of DNA–DCF in interdisciplinary research. This workshop expected participants to gain deeper methodological insights and develop network-based discourse analysis approaches for their own research projects.
