The Bioethics Master Program at the Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) successfully held a public lecture with competent speakers, namely Prof. Angus Dawson from the National University of Singapore. This activity took place on 12th to 14th November 2024 at the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health, UGM (FKKMK UGM).
The activity is one of the results of international collaboration between the Bioethics Study Program and the National University of Singapore (NUS). The results of this collaboration will certainly have an impact on students to increase their insight and knowledge by exchanging knowledge and ideas with the resources of experts in the field of bioethics.
Public health is a collective intervention aimed at improving and protecting public health. This is one of the main focuses of students in analyzing phenomena that occur by applying the knowledge gained in lectures.
The topic discussed in the guest lecturer’s lecture on this occasion was very interesting, namely “Public Health Ethics”. Prof. Angus stated there are several characteristics that are generally associated with the concept of clinical care such as patients, treatment, as well as certain values such as autonomy and privacy.
Prof. Angus also gave examples of phenomena that occur in society today regarding lifestyles that cause chronic diseases such as various types of food that can cause diabetes, cancer and heart disease. The habit of smoking and drinking alcohol is also currently widespread in society.
The discussion presented in this lecture supports the knowledge of the participants present, especially students, researchers, and activists in the fields of bioethics, public health, nursing, and experts in the field of health services. This activity hopefully is able to continue to improve networks and increase insight and knowledge, especially in the health sector.
