Biotechnology Masters and Doctoral Program, Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) held the 10th National Biotechnology Seminar and Workshop on October 26th 2024 in the SPs UGM Auditorium. This activity has the theme “Fostering Interdisciplinary Solutions in Biotechnology for Sustainability”.

Inviting leading speakers from overseas universities such as the Institute of Plant Science and Resources, Okayama University and the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Medicine at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology. This activity was attended by SPs leaders and Biotechnology Masters and Doctoral Program students.

One of the interesting discussions in this activity was the presentation by Prof. Dr. Endang Semiarti, M.S., M.Sc. from the Biotechnology Laboratory, Department of Tropical Biology, Faculty of Biology, Gadjah Mada University. Prof. Endang presented a very interesting topic regarding biotechnological approaches to cultivating orchids.

Orchids are currently one of the favorite flowers loved by the public, especially those who love ornamental plants. However, what is of concern is the declining condition of orchid plants in the wild due to several factors such as the tragedy of the eruption of Mount Merapi, illegal logging, and domestication for collection and decoration.

The quality and quantity of orchid production is highly necessary. This is because orchid plants have economic value and high selling power. The stems, roots and leaves of orchid plants can also function as medicine.

Students were very enthusiastic about participating in this activity. Sharing and discussions in this session took place actively. It is hoped that students can gain deeper insight and knowledge regarding the field of biotechnology in various practical applications.
