The Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School Disaster Management Master’s Study Program (MMB SPs UGM), as a form of Community Service (PkM) tridharma of higher education, carries out Field Work Lecture (KKL) activities in Cijedil Village, Cugenang District, Cianjur Regency. This activity lasted for 3 days on 9th – 11th October 2024.

Under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Si. and Dr. Retnadi Heru Jatmiko, M.Sc., this activity was attended by 12 students who aimed to analyze community preparedness before and after the earthquake that hit Cianjur in 2022, which had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Cijedil Village is located in an area facing serious disaster threats, endangering the lives and well-being of its residents. The 2022 earthquakes served as a call to action, highlighting the urgent need for effective disaster management strategies.

During field studies, students interact with local residents to collect data about their level of preparedness. Students conducted interviews and surveys to assess the community’s understanding of earthquake risk and their response strategies. This hands-on approach not only provides valuable insight but also encourages a sense of collaboration between students and the community.

The findings from this study will contribute to the development of educational programs aimed at improving disaster preparedness in Cijedil Village. The initiative aims to create a holistic approach to disaster risk reduction by integrating conservation and ecosystem management into these programs

This study is part of a broader effort to improve basic education and awareness regarding disaster preparedness in the area.  Through community involvement, these activities are intended to empower residents and ensure they are better prepared for future possibilities. This is in line with broader sustainable development goals, emphasizing the need for education, conservation and global cooperation in disaster management.
