YOGYAKARTA, July 30th 2026 – The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a delegation from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lampung Province on Thursday (July 30th) to discuss strategic disaster risk reduction efforts and strengthen collaboration of academia and local government.
The visit, held at the Leadership Meeting Room of the UGM Graduate School, was attended by the Chief of BPBD Lampung Province and representatives of the UGM Graduate School, including members of the leadership team, the Master of Disaster Management (MDM) Study Program, and related academic units.
The discussion focused on two of Indonesia’s most pressing disaster issues: disaster mitigation for Mount Merapi and the country’s exposure to earthquakes and potential megathrust events. Participants exchanged perspectives on disaster risk reduction strategies, institutional capacity building, and the vital role of collaboration of universities and government agencies in enhancing regional resilience.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to share experiences and best practices in disaster management while highlighting the research, education, and capacity-building initiatives undertaken by UGM’s Master of Disaster Management Study Program. The dialogue, both institutions identified opportunities, was intended to support evidence-based policymaking, strengthen disaster education, and improve disaster management practices at the regional level.
The visit is expected to pave the way for closer collaboration of BPBD Lampung Province and the UGM Graduate School in developing human resources and advancing science-based disaster mitigation strategies that address local needs and challenges.
