The Tourism Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized a Scientific Publication Bootcamp and Manuscript Writing Mentoring Program on Thursday (July 9th). Featuring Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Si. as keynote speaker, the program aimed to enhance the quality of doctoral students’ scientific publications and also supported timely graduation through the preparation of manuscripts ready for submission to reputable academic journals.

The bootcamp was designed as an intensive mentoring program to assist students in developing scientific manuscripts meeting international publication standards. In addition to receiving guidance on academic writing techniques, participants gained practical insights into selecting appropriate journals for their research, understanding the editorial process, and preparing manuscripts with a higher likelihood of acceptance in reputable journals.

Prof. Sri Rum Giyarsih, during her presentation,  emphasized that successful publication depends not only on the quality of research findings but also on the author’s ability to develop a compelling scientific narrative, understand a journal’s scope, and adhere to its author guidelines. Participants were also introduced to effective strategies for navigating the peer-review process, including interpreting reviewers’ comments and preparing systematic and well-reasoned revision responses.

The program, beyond the lecture sessions, continued with direct manuscript mentoring. During these sessions, participants discussed the progress of their manuscripts and received personalized feedback on article structure, research novelty, journal selection, and strategies for refining their papers prior to submission.

The Tourism  Doctoral Program expects its students to become better prepared to produce high-quality scientific publications that meet the standards of nationally and internationally reputable journals. In addition to strengthening students’ academic competencies, the program is expected to foster a stronger culture of scientific publication and contribute to improving the quality of research outputs within the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The Scientific Publication Bootcamp and mentoring program reflected the Tourism Doctoral Program’s commitment to strengthen students’ academic capacity. The continuous guidance and mentorship, students are expected to produce scholarly works that not only fulfill academic requirements but also make meaningful contributions to the advancement of knowledge, particularly in the field of tourism studies.
