Teddy Dyatmika, a PhD student from the Extension and Development Communication Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (PKP SPs UGM), along with his team, has won the Best Paper Award at the National Seminar titled “Transformation of Extension, Community Empowerment, and Development Communication in Preparing Resilient Human Resources Towards Indonesia Gold,” held by PKP SPs UGM on Thursday (8/8). This achievement is a proud moment for both Teddy and PKP SPs UGM. In a brief interview, Teddy shared his experience in writing the scientific article presented at the seminar.
“In the process of writing this paper, collaboration was crucial. Without collaboration, things wouldn’t go smoothly. We are now in an era of collaboration, not competition. So, collaboration is essential,” he said.
The article presented by Teddy at the seminar was a collaborative effort with Prof. Dr. Ir. Sunarru Samsi Hariadi, M.S (Professor at PKP SPs UGM), as well as his colleagues, Dimas Prasetya and Farah Farhatussho Imah. Teddy also explained that this research was conducted in partnership with various organizations such as Japelindo (Digital Literacy Activists Network), Tular Nalar, Mafindo (Indonesian Anti-Hoax Society), and was funded by Google.org, all of which share the common goal of improving digital literacy.
Entitled “Digital Literacy Extension for the Elderly in Rejecting Hoax Information,” this topic is both engaging and important. Teddy explained that through digital networks like WhatsApp groups, elderly individuals often share information without verifying its accuracy, which may turn out to be misinformation or hoaxes. Direct reprimand, however, is not considered polite. Therefore, one approach is digital literacy extension aimed at educating people about the potential presence of hoax elements in the information they share.
“Many people, especially the elderly, are unaware that the information they spread might actually be false. Thus, there needs to be education from us as educators and students who are aware of digital literacy. This is crucial so that the increasing use of the internet does not negatively impact society. We feel it is important to provide education and extension on digital literacy, especially for the elderly in the context of digital conversations,” he further explained.
His dedication to the importance of extension and communication for community development, combined with hard work and effective collaboration, has led Teddy and his team to win the Best Paper Award at the seminar.
