Azmi Zaki Waliudin Althaf and Sarwan Adi Kusumo, students of the Biotechnology Master’s Study Program at the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University, received the opportunity to take part in a traineeship program at the University of Helsinki, Finland. This activity is an embodiment of cooperation between Gadjah Mada University and the University of Helsinki, especially in the fields of education and research. Students carried out this activity at Biokeskus 1, University of Helsinki which focuses on research concentration on antimicrobial resistance for 3 months from May to August 2024.

Prof. Marko Virta, a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Helsinki who specializes in antimicrobial resistance, is a mentor for students during the study process. Students will directly involved in research being carried out by Prof. Marko Virta related to antimicrobial resistance to archaeological samples. These samples provide an understanding of the evolution of antibiotic producers such as Streptomyces which have existed from ancient times to the present and their relationship with human activities.

This program hopefully will increase cooperation between Gadjah Mada University and the University of Helsinki as a form of implementing the tridharma obligations of higher education. This is in line with the sustainable development goals (Sustainable Development Goals) pillar 4 regarding quality education and pillar 17 regarding partnerships to achieve the goals.
