On Thursday, August 29th 2024, the Expert Talk Series #2 titled “Intercity Trains and Logistic Railways,” organized by the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University (SPs UGM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), PT Celebes Railway Indonesia (CRI), and PT KA Logistik, highlighted the various challenges and innovations in the development of Indonesia’s railway network. Rosa Bovanantoo, Director of Operations and Maintenance at PT Celebes Railway Indonesia, presented on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the construction and operation of the Makassar – Parepare railway infrastructure.

Rosa Bovanantoo explained the Makassar-Parepare railway project is part of the broader Trans-Sulawesi National Railway Network initiative, involving a PPP scheme with the Ministry of Transportation. “This collaboration serves as a concrete example of how the public and private sectors are able to work together to create efficient and sustainable infrastructure,” she said. PT Celebes Railway Indonesia, established on February 6th 2019 is responsible for operating the railway line with a service period of 17 years from the commencement of the first phase of operations. Furthermore, Rosa detailed that the project’s first phase covers 160.28 kilometers with a total investment of IDR 8.8 trillion, funded partly by the government and partly through PPP funding.

The seminar concluded with a panel discussion emphasizing the importance of synergy between the government, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector in supporting better and more sustainable infrastructure development.

“Collaboration is the key. Close cooperation is the best alternative among all parties therefore we can achieve an efficient and sustainable transportation network for Indonesia’s future,” concluded Rosa Bovanantoo.
