Yogyakarta, 29 June 2024, students interested in studying the Master of Environmental Management (MPL) at the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University held sharing and discussion activities on study results as a series of field lecture events for the Environmental Economics course. This activity took place in the MPL Executive Room, Building B, Faculty of Geography, UGM. Under the guidance of lecturer Dr. Ir. Latif Sahubawa, M.Sc. from the Faculty of Agriculture, Gadjah Mada University, this activity was carried out by MPL students who were divided into 5 groups with a focus on studying the conditions of environmental economic activities at various tourist attractions in the Special Region of Yogyakarta using interview techniques with the local community.
The tourist attractions that are the destinations for research include Parangtritis and Depok Tourist Parks, Kaliurang Tourist Park, Indrayanti Beach Tourist Park, Borobudur Temple Tourist Park, Magelang, and Prambanan Temple Tourist Park. The diversity of tourist attractions is a benchmark for the results of comparing the relationship between environmental economic activities in each place and region.
The background for carrying out this study activity is to measure the role of tourism in regional economic development, detect trends in what can be done to develop the potential of tourist attractions to attract tourists, and environmental conditions in tourism areas which are of particular concern, especially regarding waste. One effort that can be made is to determine the economic value. The aim of the valuation is to maintain environmental quality and sustainable use economically and environmentally.
The results of each group’s presentation found strategies for managing environmental activities in tourist areas which had an impact on increasing the potential and capacity of tourist attractions. Strategic steps that can be taken by the community and government include waste and waste management, environmental conservation and restoration, efficient use of energy and water, disaster management, and partnerships and stakeholder involvement.
This activity is in line with the SDGs goals, namely pillar 4 on quality education, pillar 8 on decent work and economic growth, and pillar 17 on partnerships to achieve the goals.
