Journal managers within the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPs), Gadjah Mada University (UGM) participated in Open Journal System (OJS) training organized by UGM Research Directorate on Thursday (22/08) at the Gadjah Mada University Club Hotel, UGM Campus. SPs UGM manages five journals using the OJS system, namely Jurnal Kawistara, Jurnal Teknosains, Jurnal Kajian Seni, Jurnal Ketahanan Nasional, and Jurnal Bioteknologi Indonesia. The participation of SPs UGM’s journal managers in this training is an effort to optimize and update the journal management system, which is continually improving.

Prof. Drg. Diatri Nari Ratih, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.KG(K)., Secretary of the Research Directorate, was present to open the training. “UGM manages over 100 journals using OJS. It is important to update the OJS management system according to its development to reduce technological risks and ensure optimal use. This training also aims to provide additional knowledge about OJS for journal managers,” said Prof. Diatri in her opening remarks.

The training was conducted in collaboration with the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), the global developer of OJS. The session featured two key speakers: Patricia Mangahis and Jonas Raoni Soares Da Silva, with Maria Lamury, Local Liaison for PKP Indonesia, as the moderator. In the morning session, Patricia presented on the editorial workflow in OJS and how to optimize the use of plugins. As a Client Services Manager at PKP, she is responsible for innovating and refining the operational standards of the developed products.

To enhance the knowledge gained by journal managers, the training also included hands-on practice in journal management in OJS, guided by the second speaker, Jonas Raoni. As an OJS system developer at PKP, Jonas provided technical insights on updating and maintaining the OJS system, ensuring that participants could apply what they learned in real-world scenarios.

This training is part of UGM commitment in advancing education and communication technology in academic publishing. By equipping journal managers with the latest tools and knowledge, UGM aims to foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in scientific communication. The collaboration with PKP underscores the importance of leveraging global expertise to enhance local practices.
