Sleman, the Information Management and Library UGM, in collaboration with Taman Baca Mata Aksara, organized training themed “Strengthening Multimodal Literacy and Digital Learning Resources for Special Needs Educators” at The Cangkringan Hotel and Villa. This training is a concrete step in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education, on July 27th, 2024.

Heni Wardatur Rohmah, known as Bunda Mata Aksara, was the main speaker at the event. She emphasized the importance of multimodal literacy in inclusive education. “Multimodal literacy allows us to convey information through various means, not just text. This is crucial for special needs students,” said Heni.

The training was attended by 15 teachers from SLB Negeri 1 Sleman. The participants were introduced to various techniques and supporting tools to enhance the learning experience of special needs students. The training materials included the use of assistive technology, creation of inclusive visual and audio content, and strategies to integrate various modes of communication in teaching.

The headmaster of SLB Negeri 1 Sleman, in his speech, stated, “This training aligns with SDG 4.5, which aims to eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education for vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities.”

The event also supports SDG 4.a, which focuses on improving inclusive educational facilities. By equipping teachers with multimodal literacy skills and the use of digital learning resources, it is hoped that a more accessible and inclusive learning environment can be created for all students.

One participant, Mrs. Nanik, expressed her enthusiasm, “It’s truly amazing. We learned a lot. We previously didn’t realize that multimodal literacy even existed.”

This activity is part of an ongoing effort to improve the quality of inclusive education in Indonesia. By combining multimodal literacy and digital technology, it is hoped that the education gap can be reduced and equal opportunities can be provided for all students to thrive, in line with the spirit of the SDGs.

The training concluded with a discussion session and experience sharing among participants, which is expected to generate innovative ideas for the future development of inclusive education.

This activity not only aligns with SDG 4 on Quality Education but also with SDG 5 on Gender Equality, and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.
