Sleman, the Cultural Studies and Media Program with a focus on Information and Library Management (MIP) Master Program at the Graduate School (SPs) of UGM recently held an important training session supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 10 on Reducing Inequalities, on July 27th, 2024.

The training, themed “Strengthening Multimodal Literacy and Digital Learning Resources for Educators of Special Needs Students,” took place on July 27th, 2024, at The Cangkringan Hotel and Villa. The event targeted 15 teachers from SLB N 1 Sleman, aiming to enhance their capacity to use various methods and digital resources to teach special needs students.

This event was a collaboration between MIP UGM and Taman Baca Mata Aksara, with the main speaker Heni Wardatur Rohmah, known as Bunda Mata Aksara. Rohmah shared her experiences in developing effective inclusive and multimodal teaching methods for children with special needs.

Dr. Silverius Djuni Prihatin M, Si., Chief of the Information and Library Management Master Program at UGM, stated, “This training aligns with our commitment to support the SDGs. By enhancing the skills of SLB teachers in multimodal literacy and the use of digital resources, we hope to contribute in improving the quality of inclusive education and reducing educational inequalities.”

The training covered topics such as assistive technology, the development of multimodal learning materials, and strategies for integrating digital resources into the SLB curriculum. Participants also learned how to create accessible learning content for various types of disabilities.

One participant, Mrs. Asih, a teacher from SLB N 1 Sleman, commented, “This training has opened my eyes to the potential of technology and digital resources in helping our students. I believe this will be very beneficial in enhancing their learning experiences.”

This activity is part of UGM’s ongoing efforts to support inclusive and accessible education, in line with SDG 4.5, which aims to “ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for vulnerable communities, including persons with disabilities.”

It is hoped with this training the SLB teachers will teach more effectively and empower special needs students, thereby contributing to reducing educational inequalities and improving their quality of life in the future.
