Yogyakarta – Master Program on Bioethics, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a Stakeholder Meeting and Moral Distress Seminar for Doctors and Health Workers on Friday, February 14th 2025. This event took place online through the Zoom platform.

This stakeholder meeting was held in the context of a five-year reflection of the Bioethics Master Program. The aims of this event are evaluating the effectiveness of the program, getting input from stakeholders, and identifying challenges and opportunities in curriculum development.

The event was opened with remarks from the Chief of the UGM Bioethics Master Program, Dr. Retna Siwi Padmawati, M.A. She said that this was a five-year reflection of the Bioethics Study Program with all its challenges and the desire of the study program to evaluate and determine the future direction of the Bioethics Study Program.

This was followed by a presentation and introduction of the Master Program by Prof. Dra. Yayi Suryo Prabandari, M.Si., Ph.D. She explained the scope of bioethics in the academic world and health practices, the history and vision and mission of the study program, and the prospects for graduates. She also emphasized the importance of a transdisciplinary approach in bioethics education.

This activity was followed by a seminar that raised the issue of Moral Distress, by drg. Agnes Bakti Pratiwi, PhD and Dr. Nur Azid Mahardinata, the moral distress experienced by health workers when they know the right ethical actions but are hampered by health system policies, legal considerations, or other institutional factors. This condition can affect the welfare of health workers and the quality of patient care.

The seminar was attended by various parties, including academics, health practitioners, hospital representatives, health regulators, as well as alumni and users of UGM Bioethics Master Program graduates. Through this event, the UGM Bioethics Study Program hopes to increase understanding of ethical challenges in health practice as well as strengthen networks between academics and the professional world and support the further development of this study program to produce graduates who are competent and have a strong understanding of ethics in the medical world.
