Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Si., M.Sc., Chair of the Postgraduate School (SPs) Population Doctoral Study Program at Gadjah Mada University was the main speaker in the training activity on writing and preparing published articles for students of the Master of Population Study Program. The training was held for 3 days on 28-30 May 2024 in the MPL Executive Room, Building B, Faculty of Geography, UGM.
The activity theme was “Tips for success in getting into reputable international journals” provides attractive insight for students to start writing scientific papers. “One of the steps that can be taken to encourage academic contributions among lecturers and students is providing training in the preparation and publication of articles such as the SPs Performance Achievement Targets (TCK),” said Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Sc., M.Sc. in her opening speech.
There are several urges for publication in reputable international journals, the main focus being the cause of its importance, including dissemination of research results to the wider public at the international level, contribution to the production of knowledge in the international academic context, and as a bargaining position for academic narratives at the international level . Lecturers and students have an important role in encouraging publications at the international level as a step to adapt to today’s scientific dynamics.
Prof. Dr. Sri Rum Giyarsih, S.Sc., M.Sc. share her knowledge on the steps on scientific journals publication at the international level. One of them is paying attention to the style of the journal’s in-house style writing. Journal environment style or better known as in-house style in writing scientific papers is a writing system which is standardized by the publisher of a paper so therefore the published articles have the same style.
There are several differences between a good published paper and a substandard published paper. A good published paper has the characteristics of containing important and relevant information and results, in-depth analysis, focus, and presenting evidence that supports the findings. Meanwhile, there are several characteristics of a substandard published paper, namely that it is complicated and difficult to understand, a lot of repetition, more guesswork than evidence through research results, and the paper only contains a collection of data without any analysis, only results presentation.
This activity provides an opportunity for students to gain insight into the latest trends in the field of population and how to identify research topics that are relevant and contribute to the development of science. Students in the Master of Population Study Program are expected to take a broader view of the importance of publications to support students’ academic careers and studies.
This activity is a form of study program support for the realization of pillar 4 of the SDGs regarding the quality of education.
