The issue of toddlers stunting in Indonesia is a serious health concern. It is necessary to increase the consumption of nutritious food to address this problem. In light of this, the Islamic Economics and Halal Industry Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of UGM (PIIH) initiated a program to assist in catfish farming and the creation of a “Taman Syurga” (family vegetable garden) based on aquaponics in Pringwulung Village, led by Dr. Reni Rosari, M.B.A.
Reni Rosari explained that aquaponics is an integrated farming system that combines aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (soil-less plant cultivation). The waste from fish farming is utilized as nutrition for plants, while the plants serve as a natural filter to clean the water. This system creates an efficient and sustainable ecosystem. Dr. John Suprihanto added that this program is a tangible example of applying knowledge to solve social problems.
The PKM program team consists of Prof. Dr. Sudjadi, M.S., Apt., Dr. John Suprihanto, MIM., Ragil Satria Wicaksana, and Zielhapes Fuady. The team also actively involves the local community, particularly the PKK mothers and Posyandu cadres. The main activities of the program include training in catfish farming and aquaponic vegetable cultivation techniques, plant nutrition management, and education on the importance of nutrition for child development. As one of the training participants shared.
The community has welcomed this PkM program from PIIH. As expressed by Mrs. Lucia, “With the presence of this aquaponic garden, we can provide nutritious food for toddlers.” Additionally, Wawan Widiantoro, S.IP., MPA., the Chief of Kapanewon Depok, expressed his hope that this program would increase the production of nutritious food and raise awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition. This statement was made during the handover of the Aquaponic-Based “Taman Syurga” to the community of Pringwulung Village (September 18th 2024).
