The Graduate School, Universitas Gadjah Mada, has once again achieved academic excellence at the international level. This accomplishment comes from Muhammad Irfan Nurdiansyah, a student of the Master’s Program in Disaster Management (MMB) at UGM Graduate School. Together with his colleague, Reski Putra Utama, Irfan wrote a scholarly article in the form of a book review titled “Complexity Theory for Social Work Practice.” Irfan and Reski successfully published their academic work at the end of May 2024 in the Journal of Social Work Education, Taylor & Francis, a reputable international publication indexed in Scimago with a Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) score exceeding 0.7 as of 2023, placing it in the Q1/Q2 journal group.
Scimago is an international institution that indexes research journal rankings, renowned for measuring the reputation of scholarly articles. With an SJR score exceeding 0.1 and being in the Q1 or Q2 journal group, an academic article is considered to be of high quality.
Writing this academic work was one of Irfan’s goals as a student of MMB at UGM Graduate School. Irfan mentioned that during his undergraduate studies, he was unaware of the importance of publishing academic works, but now he aims to continue his scholarly endeavors so that his sustainable thinking can be read and studied by many.
Irfan and his colleague undoubtedly went through a lengthy and challenging process. Good time management was essential to balance their studies and writing. Their active and effective discussions, coupled with dedication and commitment, led them to achieve this prestigious publication. Looking ahead, Irfan hopes to also publish his research thesis in reputable international journals.
“Through learning, we can help others because before helping we must be knowledgeable. Helping does not mean we are wealthy, but we understand what it feels like to have nothing,” said Irfan, recalling the message conveyed by his late mother.
UGM Graduate School takes pride in Irfan’s achievement of his first international publication and continues to support all UGM Graduate School students in their academic and non-academic pursuits.
