The Research Grant Team from the Tourism Doctoral Program, Graduate School of UGM, conducted a study to explore the tourism potential in Luk Panenteng Village, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi. The goal is the location can be used as a basis for formulating a strategy for the development of the village as a tourism destination in August 2024.

The team found that Luk Panenteng Village has unique and attractive tourism potential, though it is still hidden. The natural underwater beauty, exotic beaches, and the rich culture of the village’s people hold extraordinary potential to become a leading tourist destination.

Visitors can enjoy the sensation of fishing in the open sea with a gentle breeze or simply relax on the beach while watching the sunset. The pristine mangrove forest is also a unique attraction, with a distinctive ecosystem and a variety of bird species inhabiting it. In addition, the soft white sand enhances the experience of strolling along the coastline. Diving enthusiasts can explore the stunning underwater world with crystal-clear waters and a turquoise hue.

However, from the observations, the team found that developing Luk Panenteng Village will require several stages of development, at least over the next five years.

The strategy that needs to be implemented includes: 1) Strengthening the Tourism Institutions at the Village Level and Human Resources, 2) Availability of a Master Plan and Strategic Plan for Tourism, 3) Diversification of Tourism Products, 4) Effective Marketing and Establishing Partnerships with Related Institutions, 5) Professional Management of Tourist Attractions, including conducting effective operational activities and maintenance, 6) Consistent implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities.

The village’s potential as a marine tourism village has started to attract both domestic and international tourists, but the current condition is still not optimal. Sustainable tourism development must meet four pillars according to the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council).

These four pillars are social development, economic development, environmental development, and legal and governance development.

The efforts to develop the tourism potential of Luk Panenteng also require synergy from various parties.

This activity is also in line with the implementation of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Number 3, on Good Health and Well-Being; Number 8, on Decent Work and Economic Growth; Number 9, on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Number 14, on Life Below Water; and Number 17, on Partnerships for the Goals.
