The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) organized a Scientific Writing Workshop on Wednesday–Thursday, 17th – 18th December 2025, held at the 5th Floor Auditorium of the UGM Graduate School. The workshop was attended by hundreds of master and doctoral students from various study programs within the Graduate School of UGM.

The first day of the workshop, Wednesday (17/12), was officially opened by the Dean of the Graduate School of UGM, Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D.. She was emphasizing the importance of strengthening academic integrity amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies in higher education.

“I encourage all students to make the most of this workshop so that the process of writing their theses and dissertations can proceed smoothly and support timely graduation,” said Prof. Siti Malkhamah in her opening remarks.

The main session featured a presentation by Prof. Nurdiana Gaus, S.S., PGDIP, Ph.D., who discussed effective strategies for writing theses and dissertations in accordance with academic standards. In her presentation, Prof. Nurdiana outlined key stages of scientific writing, ranging from developing research backgrounds and formulating methodologies to interpreting data and connecting research findings with relevant literature and theoretical frameworks.

The conceptual discussion was followed by a session addressing ethical aspects of scientific writing through Plenary Session 1 entitled Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence, delivered by Dr. Irwan Endrayanto Aluicius, S.Si., M.Sc. He is one of the lecturers who initiated the development of UGM’s Academic Ethics Guidelines concerning the use of generative artificial intelligence in higher education.

“The Academic Ethics Guidelines of UGM were developed to ensure that the use of artificial intelligence remains within the principles of integrity, transparency, and academic responsibility,” Irwan explained.

The first day’s agenda concluded with Plenary Session 2 on The Use and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, featuring Dr. Leonard Chrysostomos Epafras as the speaker. During this session, participants gained practical insights into the use of artificial intelligence as a supporting tool in scientific writing, including a demonstration of AI applications to assist in developing academic manuscripts responsibly.

The Graduate School of UGM, with the implementation of the first day of the workshop, hopes that the activity will strengthen students’ understanding of scientific writing in the era of artificial intelligence while fostering greater awareness of the importance of academic integrity.
