On September 10th2024, the Public Relations, News, and Protocol Office of UGM held a technical workshop on image capture techniques for reporting at the Press Union Meeting Room on the 3rd Floor of the UGM Faculty of Philosophy. This event was attended by the Public Relations team of UGM Graduate School (SPs UGM), represented by Latif Nuryawan and Dwi Purwanto, as well as PR teams from various UGM units.
The event, themed “Sharpening the Visual Narrative of Gadjah Mada University,” featured Wawan Hadi Prabowo, a professional photographer from Kompas Daily, as the keynote speaker. The workshop began with a welcome speech from Dr. Iva Ariani, S.S., M.Hum., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM, followed by a presentation from the speaker.
Wawan, as he is commonly known, shared his experiences in the field of photography. He explained that photographs are a medium for conveying messages, and what is seen in a photo can become a narrative in reporting. During this session, Wawan also shared several of his photographs with the participants, including images of demonstrations, graduation ceremonies, art performances, and more.
After the presentation, participants were invited to practice image capture on objects around the Faculty of Philosophy UGM using cameras or smartphones. This practical session was crucial for the participants’ development in photography. A discussion session was also held to provide feedback on the photos/images taken by the participants.
“This technical workshop was conducted by a professional photographer, so the material presented was truly needed by the media colleagues at UGM. Such training is very beneficial as it provides an understanding of the Point of View (POV) in taking photos to create images that can tell stories and depict ongoing conditions/events,” said Dwi Purwanto.
The event not only focused on enhancing photography skills but also aimed to encourage collaboration among UGM units. By bringing together PR teams from various units, the session fostered the sharing of best practices and experiences, which are essential for building a cohesive narrative for the university. By equipping participants with skills, it is hoped that professional development will be enhanced and the PR team’s readiness to improve reporting quality at UGM will be ensured.
