On Thursday (May 22nd), journal managers from the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) participated in the 2025 Sharing Session on Scientific Journal Indexing Strategies in Scopus, held online via Zoom Meeting. This event was organized by the UGM Directorate of Research and was attended by journal managers from across UGM, particularly those managing journals accredited with SINTA 2. Currently, SPs UGM manages four SINTA 2-accredited journals with the potential to apply for Scopus indexing, namely Jurnal Kawistara, Jurnal Kajian Seni, Jurnal Teknosains, and Jurnal Ketahanan Nasional.
Secretary of the UGM Directorate of Research, drg. Diatri Nari Ratih, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.KG(K), in her opening remarks, emphasized the importance of professional journal management as a key in maintaining the quality of scientific publications. “One of the benchmarks is international indexing such as Scopus. International indexing is highly beneficial for enhancing institutional reputation and opening opportunities for global collaboration,” she stated.
The session featured two keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. apt. Puji Astuti, M.Sc., Editor in Chief of Majalah Obat Tradisional, and Prof. Dr. Eng. Muhammad Zudhy Irawan, S.T., M.T., Editor in Chief of the Journal of the Civil Engineering Forum. The journal managed by Prof. Puji has successfully been indexed in Scopus with a Q4 ranking, while the journal led by Prof. Zudhy was officially indexed in Scopus in April 2025.
In their presentations, both speakers shared their experiences and strategies in the process of submitting and gaining acceptance into Scopus. “It took us four years to prepare the submission of Majalah Obat Tradisional to Scopus. Before finally being indexed in 2022, we received numerous notes for improvement, including consistency in publishing articles aligned with the journal’s focus and scope, high-quality tables and figures, good English language usage, and clear, comprehensible abstracts,” explained Prof. Puji.
Meanwhile, Prof. Zudhy emphasized the importance of perseverance in journal management, despite having faced two rejections before being accepted this year. “As journal managers, we must provide timely decisions to authors. This is essential to build trust and encourage them to publish their work in our journals. Being a journal manager means dedication in time, amid other responsibilities, to focus on managing article content and consistently updating the journal website,” he said.
