The Master’s and Doctoral Program in Leadership and Policy Innovation organized an innovation study visit for the collaborative class of the Barito Selatan Regional Government at Forward Living and Lingnan University, Hong Kong as part of experiential learning. The activity, held on January 13th – 15th 2025, was attended by students, management from the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) and the MD-KIK program, lecturers, and staff.
This study aimed to explore policy innovations for elderly services and the university’s role in supporting the Hong Kong government’s efforts to address an aging population and increased life expectancy. The first visit was to Forward Living, a private sector entity providing senior citizen services with a human-centered approach and customized programs. Forward Living also integrates technological support to help the elderly remain active and independent in their daily lives.
The delegation then visited Lingnan University to learn about Gerontechnology, Business Incubation Management, and Waste Management Innovations. The Gerontechnology Lab emphasized the importance of promoting tools and technology to support elderly independence. “By effectively utilizing existing technologies, seniors can remain active and independent while enjoying a good quality of life,” said Stephen, an ambassador for the lab.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became challenging for Hong Kong’s youth to secure employment. Recognizing this, Lingnan University established the i-Common HK business incubator, a social innovation platform promoting the concept of “Commons.” The “Commoning” project focuses on collective management, including running start-ups that resemble cooperatives, where all profits are allocated to charity. Activities include social trips to Thailand and Jeju Island, South Korea, where participants learn about local traditions, culture, and wisdom to inspire new business ventures upon returning to Hong Kong.
“We hope i-Common consistently carries out its initiatives, inspiring and encouraging Hong Kong’s youth to develop social enterprises aligned with SDG principles,” said Jolie, a senior administrative staff member at CCRD Lingnan University. “This business incubation model is compelling and could serve as an innovative program, as all profits are dedicated to social causes,” added Yudha, a faculty advisor from the MD-KIK program.
Dr. techn. Khabib Mustofa, S.Si., M.Kom., Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources at SPs UGM, praised the study as highly relevant and impactful. “This study visit aligns perfectly with its objectives and is expected to provide meaningful insights for the participants, all of whom are employees from the Barito Selatan Regional Government,” he remarked.
