Yogyakarta, May 25th 2025 – Students of the Master of Technology for Sustainable Development Study Program of the UGM Postgraduate School (MTPB SPs) held a field lecture in Nayan Village, Maguwoharjo. The students together with the villagers worked together to make gabions to prevent erosion on the banks of the Sendang Mulyo River, Grojogan River, Nayan Village, Maguwoharjo.

This activity was initiated as a preventive effort against erosion disasters and community empowerment involving MTPB students. Therefore the goal of synergy of the community and students in community service activities to create rivers as clean and environmentally friendly tourist attractions is achieved.

The activity began with an introduction from the UGM MTPB students and coordination with the local government or local community leaders. Next, the students and residents went to the banks of the Sendang Mulyo River together to transport the gabions to be assembled and put into the river. The results of this activity were that students and residents had successfully made 2 (two) gabion units (berondongan).

“The river is planned to be developed as a tourist destination. Therefore, it has been agreed to manage waste carried from upstream by each village or RT/RW through which the river flows so that cleanliness is maintained,” said Mr. Nur, the activity coordinator from a local community leader.

The mutual cooperation activity between the community and MTPB UGM students is a real action in maintaining and preserving the surrounding environment. Mutual cooperation becomes an educational medium for the community with the presence of students as a momentum to exchange ideas, youthful energy, and collaborative spirit.
