
Yogyakarta – The Higher Education Management Master Program (MMPT) of the UGM Graduate School once again held a scientific discussion in the MMPT-Talks#9 forum with the theme “The Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education.” The activity, which took place online on Friday, February 14th 2025, presented Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Suning Kusumawardani, S.T, M.T., Director of Resources, Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, as the main speaker.
This discussion aims to provide broad insight into the application of AI in everyday life, especially in the realm of higher education. Attended by 205 participants, this event was moderated by Dr.rer.nat. Ir. Wahyu Supartono, Head of the MMPT Study Program, who also directed the discussion to remain focused and in-depth.
Dean of the UGM Graduate School, Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., in her opening remarks highlighted the rapid development of AI which is increasingly being used in various aspects of life, including the world of education. “The use of AI is already very widespread, but we need sufficient knowledge to use it wisely through the values and ethics of everyday life as humans,” she said.
Meanwhile, in her presentation, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Suning Kusumawardani emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s role in developing AI, not just as a technology consumer, but also as an innovator. “Indonesia must become a player, not only a consumer of technology,” she said.
This discussion explored the various potentials and challenges in implementing AI in higher education environments, ranging from increasing the efficiency of academic administration, personalizing learning, to ethical challenges in its use. AI is considered capable of providing innovative solutions in improving the quality of higher education in Indonesia, but still requires clear regulations and policies so that its implementation is in accordance with the academic values adopted.
The enthusiasm of the participants in this forum reflects the high interest of academics, students, and education practitioners in AI influencer in the education sector. The use of AI in higher education environments can be increasingly optimal, in line with the vision of developing technology-based education that is globally competitive with discussions like this.
