The Master of Higher Education Management Program (MMPT) Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School is holding a routine agenda which is held every 3 months, namely MMPT Talks, which on this occasion discusses networks and superior scholarship programs at 3 (three) universities in Taiwan. MMPT Talks Series #7 was held in a hybrid manner on June 14th 2024 in the Leadership Meeting Room of the Postgraduate School Unit 1 Building which was attended by MMPT students and alumni as well as the general public.
The theme was “Higher Education Cooperation Between Indonesia and Taiwan”, MMPT presented competent speakers, namely Dr. phil. Vissia Ita Yulianto, Exchange Associate Professor National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan in this sharing and discussion session. He is a social scientist with expertise in socio-cultural anthropology, post-coloniality, and Southeast Asian studies.
“Education is very important. We have a proportion of the population of productive age and the working age generation must be prepared so that our generation will not only look for work but also create job opportunities. “Having a discussion about superior scholarship opportunities in Taiwan can enable us to see more opportunities by adapting existing resources in Indonesia while still paying attention to existing goals and values,” said Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN.Eng., Dean of the Postgraduate School when giving a speech at the start of the event.
The speaker conveyed that there are many scholarship and collaboration opportunities that Indonesian students, especially MMPT students, can obtain to continue their studies in Taiwan. In this session, 3 (three) main universities that could be destinations were presented, namely National Chengchi University (NCCU), Tamkang University, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST).
The profile of each university is explained in detail starting from departments, number of students and teaching staff, types of scholarships provided, to potential collaborations that can be carried out. Students who plan to study in Taiwan with superior scholarship programs are given the freedom to choose scholarship types such as International College of Innovation (ICI), International Master’s Program of Applied Economics and Social Development (IMES), International Master’s Program in International Studies ( IMPIS), Master’s Program in Global Communication and Innovation Technology (GCIT), International Master’s Program in International Communication Studies (IMICS), International Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IMAS), International Master’s in Business Administration (IMBA), and International Doctoral Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IDAS).
These three Taiwan universities also offer various programs, including exchange professors, summer courses, joint research, joint supervision, joint lectures, sandwich programs and double degree programs. The potential for university collaboration in Indonesia and Taiwan is extraordinary with uncomplicated infrastructure and mechanisms. One of the requirements that is a challenge is that students must master Mandarin language skills, but there is the option that students can also choose international classes.
The sharing and discussion in this MMPT Talks session was very interactive, MMPT students and alumni asked each other questions and of course got very satisfying answers from the resource person. At the end of the session, Dr. phil. Vissia gave a message to all participants that building relationships is very important. Personal networking is very helpful for building institutional networking.
