Information Management and Library Science Study at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a public lecture on 28th October 2025 featuring Assoc. Prof. Hazmi bin Mohd Rusli from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). The event, held at the 3rd floor of the UGM Graduate School Building, was attended by students from the 2024 and 2025 cohorts and served as an enriching academic and professional learning space.
In the first session, Assoc. Prof. Hazmi shared his academic journey while pursuing a Ph.D. in the Law of the Sea at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He successfully completed his doctoral studies in less than three years with minimal revisions, an achievement that serves as an inspiration for students to continue to the doctoral level. He also provided practical guidance on selecting supervisors, formulating research topics, and managing pressure during doctoral studies. According to him, effective time management and open communication with supervisors are two key factors that significantly contribute to academic success.
Assoc. Prof. Hazmi emphasized in the second session, the importance of cultivating a writing habit early on. He explained that consistent writing whether in the form of academic articles, reflective notes, or simple commentaries can open various professional opportunities. He also shared his experience of meeting U.S. military personnel in 2023, an opportunity that arose due to his consistent writing, which has gained increasing international recognition. He stressed that no piece of writing is ever wasted, as every work carries the potential to create value and opportunities in the future.
Through this public lecture, MIP UGM demonstrated its strong commitment in equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to the evolving landscape of academia and information studies.
