The complexity of environmental problems caused by the rapid increases in global population and industrialization, combined with the effects of global climate change, has become a crucial issue to be examined. We need to find systematic and comprehensive methods for creating positive environtmental outcomes. Within the framework of sustainable development, the enhancement of environmental quality will consequently support the improvement of the quality of human life. Human beings have a central role in achieving and maintaining sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature. A higher quality of life can be attained from mastering new technologies at all stages of environmental management, from planning to implementation and evaluation. The utilization of green technology will result in the production of sustainable products.

This systematic way of thinking is the foundation of making a comprehensive strategy and plan to influence governmental policies and regulations both nationally and locally, in both formal and non-formal sectors throughout Indonesia. These efforts should be supported by adaptive and dynamic knowledge, resources, and the greater culture of Indonesian society. The concept of ‘appropriate technology’ refers to tehcnological advances designed not to dominate nature, but to be in harmony with it. Appropriate technology involves ensuring that technologies are fitted to the biophysical context, taking into account health, climate, biodiversity and ecology, and the psycho-social context which includes social institutions, politics, culture, economics, ethics and the personal/spiritual needs of individuals.
