The Indonesian region is vulnerable to many types of disasters, including natural and anthropogenic disasters. The former can be in the form of  earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, and droughts, while the latter may be human-induced disasters, such as forest fires and industrial/technological disasters.

Despite the wide range and variety of disasters, specialists capable of managing such disasters, and those equipped with the capability to utilize geo-information sciences, are still very limited. To respond to this need, Program  of Geo-Information for Spatial Planning and Risk Management  is established. The objective of the course is to develop academic and professional skills in managing disasters, with an emphasis on the application of geo-information (RS/GIS) for spatial planning, risk, and disaster management before, during, and after an event. The management involves a combination of scientific knowledge development and technical skills within a multidisciplinary approach.

After completion of the MSc course, students will be able to understand the characteristics and processes of hazards and natural disasters, with an emphasis on improvement of knowledge and skills in the application of geo-information (RS/GIS) in disaster management and related spatial issues. Students will also be able to apply and develop methodologies in disaster-related scientific research.
