To achieve sustainable development, the development process must considered in relation to the effect it has on the environment, through the promotion of an environmental ethic. The term ‘sustainable development’ refers to Agenda 21, which calls for attention to be to given environmental issues, by taking into account the social, economic, and cultural aspects of natural resource management, including bio-component diversities and other natural resources. To respond to these issues, the Environmental Science Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada is using a geographical ecology approach which integrates the physical, biological and socio-cultural aspects of environment.
