Yogyakarta (15/8), the Master’s Program in Environmental Management at Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (MPL SPs UGM) held matriculation field lecture activities in three different locations. The first location is in the Mount Merapi area, precisely in Watu Gede which is part of the volcanic plains. The second location is in Bantul, which is a volcanic Fluvio plain, and the third location is in a marine sand dune plain, an area famous for its sandy landscape.

This activity was attended by 24 students. Participants consisted of eleven MPL students from class 45 and 13 MPL students from class 46 who had just started their studies. During field courses, students are invited to study and observe directly various environmental phenomena and typical ecosystems in each location, as well as understand the important role of environmental management in maintaining natural balance.

“This field study aims at providing practical experience to students in understanding environmental dynamics, strengthening theoretical knowledge obtained in class, and building analytical skills in sustainable management of natural resources,” said Dr. Langgeng Wahyu Santosa, S.Si., M.Si. as Chief of MPL Program Interests and coordinator of field study implementation.

During the activity, students were not only observers but also actively participating in discussions on sustainable practices and policies. They are encouraged to reflect their experiences and consider how they can apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. This approach is in line with the SDGs’ emphasis on education as a tool for sustainable development and ecosystem protection.

This field study activity also highlights the importance of collaboration between students, faculty and local communities in overcoming environmental challenges. Students gain valuable insight with local stakeholders’ involvement into the practical aspects of environmental management and the need for inclusive approaches that consider the perspectives of various community members.
