Yogyakarta, May 21st 2025 — The Cultural and Media Studies (KBM) master Program of the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a workshop with a contemporary theme, namely “Not All Meanings Are Created Equal: Narrative Techniques in Moving Image”. This event was attended by students, lecturers, and alumni from various backgrounds

This workshop presented speakers from academic circles, namely Prof. Dr. Eva Warth, Professor Emerita, Ruhr-Universitat Bochum. Prof. Eva discussed how narratives in moving images, whether films, short videos, advertisements or digital content, not only convey stories, but also form meanings ideologically, politically, and culturally.

The most interesting session was the presentation of visual techniques for product advertising. Participants were also invited to analyze film clips and discuss how point of view, shooting, and editing techniques can influence the interpretation and meaning produced.

Students were given the assignment to present the results of a video review in the form of an advertisement structure with an objective discussion. The problematization and analysis discussed are very detailed starting from expression, movement, and resolution. This is clarified by the video presentation presented by the presenter so that participants can observe every detail in the video together.

The event closed with an open discussion session. The results showed how diverse the meanings can be generated from the same story source, depending on the narrative approach used.
